Anyone who grew up in the 1990s understands exactly what happens after hearing the phrase ‘Weeheeheehee dee heeheeheehee weeoh aweem away.’
You see, Solomon Linda wrote and recorded the song ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ as ‘Mbube’ (‘Lion’ in Zulu) in South Africa in 1939.
It later ‘became a number-one hit in the United States’ after being translated into English by The Tokens.
Since 1994, when it appeared on the Lion King movie’s soundtrack, it has become incredibly well-known among kids.
A boys choir in Lithuania performed this song a few years ago, and their audience was enthralled by how incredible their performance was.
Remigijus Adomaitis, an enthusiastic Lithuanian choir director who established a boys’ chorus studio in
the early 1990s, led the group of more than 30 boys, ranging in age from young schoolboys to older teenagers.
2017 saw the Dagillis boys and youth choir perform the well-known song in a very unique style under his direction.
You see, each boy tried his best to mimic the sound of the natural background singing before the actual singing began.
Some of the boys made sounds similar to those made by wind-blown trees and flowers or by moving animals.
Others played the role of jungle creatures like monkeys, exotic birds, or virtually any wild animal.
Adomaitis reminded them with his hands the appropriate volume for each type of sound to be made at the appropriate time, etc.
Only moments later, the boys started singing.
They began singing while swaying their hands left and right, ‘Weem away aweem away.’
They appeared to be so talented that the entire song flowed without any problems.
At the same time, it was clear by looking at them closely with the camera’s zoom that they were enjoying what they were doing at the time.
Although they were obviously following the director’s guidelines, and they were focusing on their tasks (miming an animal sound/singing), they looked very happy when they were doing it.
The audience cheered and applauded the skilled boys after the song was finished.
The performance’s video was posted to YouTube, where it has received nearly 6 million views since then.
Since more than 130k people have liked the video, it is clear that the majority of users who watch it like it a lot.
‘I was a member of this choir… The fact that someone in the comments said, ‘I was one of the smallest there and I still remember,
I was just enjoying it as though we were just playing with my friends,’ makes the entire thing even more incredible.
Naturally, the majority of the comments praised the guys’ performance. Someone said, ‘This is by far the best rendition of this song I’ve heard.’
